Zimbabwe, a country rich in natural resources and vibrant culture, has long grappled with the challenge of water scarcity, particularly in its rural and semi-urban areas.

The Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme, a groundbreaking initiative by the Zimbabwean government, has been a significant step towards addressing this issue.

Borehole Experts Zimbabwe will delve into the impact of this scheme, with a special focus on how it has alleviated water woes at the Johane Marange Apostolic Church International Headquarters in Rusape, and its broader implications for water security across Zimbabwe.

The Johane Marange Apostolic Church International: A Hub of Community and Faith

The Johane Marange Apostolic Church International, headquartered in Rusape, is a prominent religious and social institution in Zimbabwe. The church is renowned for its annual gathering, which attracts over 10,000 pilgrims from all ten provinces of Zimbabwe and neighboring Botswana.

This event, held every September, is a testament to the church's influence and the strong sense of community it fosters. However, this large-scale gathering has historically been marred by severe water shortages, posing a substantial challenge to the organizers and attendees.

The Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme: A Government Initiative

Launched in 2019, the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme is a comprehensive government initiative aimed at countering acute water shortages, especially in rural communities. The scheme, with an initial target of drilling 35,000 rural boreholes, is designed to ensure that every village in Zimbabwe has access to clean water. This initiative has been extended to include urban areas, reflecting the government's commitment to universal access to clean water.

Timely Intervention at Johane Marange Shrine

In a significant development, Prevail International, under the auspices of the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme, has drilled a borehole at the Johane Marange Apostolic Church International Headquarters. This timely intervention came just ahead of the church's annual gathering, addressing a longstanding water challenge that had plagued the shrine.

Zvanetsa Muchuchu, a representative of the shrine, expressed profound gratitude for the intervention. "We are grateful that our cries were finally heard, water has been a very big challenge as we host the biggest gathering every year in September. The gathering attracts more than ten thousand people from all over Zimbabwe and even Botswana, hence water is a need and we are happy Prevail International saw fit to drill a borehole here," Muchuchu said.

Immediate and Long-Term Benefits

The newly drilled borehole is expected to have both immediate and long-term benefits for the shrine and its community. During the annual gathering, the borehole will ensure that the thousands of pilgrims have access to clean water, alleviating the historical water shortages that have hampered the event.

Beyond the immediate relief, the borehole will also enhance the shrine's agricultural activities. Shadreck Mbiri, a long-time employee of the shrine, highlighted the significance of this development. "The borehole will not only alleviate the water crisis but also enable the shrine to enhance its agricultural activities through irrigation. The church looks after orphans and widows and we want to do agriculture to sustain us hence the borehole will enable us to do so."

Philanthropic Work and Community Impact

The Johane Marange Apostolic Church International is known for its philanthropic work, particularly in accommodating orphans and widows. The availability of clean water through the borehole will significantly bolster these efforts. By enabling irrigation for agricultural activities, the church can sustain its vulnerable population more effectively, contributing to food security and sovereignty.

Broader Implications for Zimbabwe

The Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme is not limited to the Johane Marange Shrine; it has far-reaching implications for water security across Zimbabwe. The scheme aims to drill boreholes in every village, ensuring that rural communities have access to clean water for drinking and irrigation. This initiative also extends to urban areas, where boreholes will supplement water supplies from existing dams and reservoirs, addressing water shortages in cities like Harare, Chitungwiza, and Bulawayo.

In rural areas, a total of 35,000 solar-powered boreholes are being drilled under the scheme to provide water for drinking and irrigation of special nutrition gardens. This aligns with the national vision of attaining food security and sovereignty. Dr. Paul Tungwarara, special presidential advisor overseeing the borehole drilling program, emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring every Zimbabwean has access to clean water. "We responded to the distress calls in Marange and we are drilling boreholes for the communities here so as to ensure that people will not have to deal with medieval diseases like cholera and typhoid. We are also responding to President Mnangagwa’s call of leaving no one and no place behind," he said.

Government Commitment and Future Plans

The government has accelerated the borehole drilling program, particularly in response to recent cholera outbreaks in areas like the Marange district. The new target is to ensure that every Zimbabwean has a borehole within walking distance. Urban areas, which have long been affected by water shortages due to inefficiencies in local councils, will also benefit from this scheme. Harare and Chitungwiza are expected to get over 200 solar-powered boreholes, with similar initiatives in other cities like Kwekwe, Bulawayo, and Gweru.

The long-term vision includes the completion of major dam projects like the Gwayi-Shangani Dam and the Kunzvi Dam, which will supply extra water to Bulawayo and Harare. Until these projects are completed, the borehole drilling scheme serves as a critical short-term solution to the country's water challenges.
